Alone…

…The halls of WQKE are empty. Spring break has flushed the teeming throng of college broadcasters that usually infest this place. I am sitting in my office, rituallistically filling out my show time. I think I might go home soon, but this is a rare bit of peace and quiet here; I like it.

Midterms are over and I can’t say I’m super-thrilled with how I did. I guess it was okay, but I think I could’ve done better. I suppose that’s what the second half of semesters are for.

Hagan Fox, the creator of Qdig, which I have been contibuting to here-and-there, has mentioned that he wants to expand his site a little bit. He is looking for collaborators to share some of the workload. I said I would be thrilled to do that, especially considering my php coding experience (tiny, insignificant) compared to my website and content management experience (moderate). I’ve tossed around some ideas for possible ways to expand. This could be a very fun project.

One of Evan(Ninja in the USA)’s friends mentioned a project he might be starting up in the future. He wants to open a LAN center here in Plattsburgh. A LAN center is a place where people can go a play networked computer games on good machines, eat lots of pizza, and not have to worry about lugging equipment around and having everything set-up properly. This convenience usually comes at a price. Users typically pay by the hour or by the night for large group parties. I think there’s really a market for this. All we have right now, in Plattsburgh, is Hyper Hut. If you look at their website you can see a few things that would throw up a red flag right away.

  1. Flash, and not good flash either. Crappy flash, with low-res images, and gawdy sound effects. It’s a perfect example of “Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should do that thing.”
  2. Deer Hunt: 2004 - Yes this Plattsburgh, yes we have hicks, but do hicks know what LAN centers are?
  3. Paddles - Ages 5-29, what do you call the thing you hold and push buttons on to make a game “go”? You call it a controller, like a healthy normal American gamer. 30 and up? You guessed it; anything that plugs in is a paddle. Xbox controller? A paddle. Light gun? A paddle. Dance Dance Revolution Mat? A paddle. This is a an archaic leftover from the OLD old-school of gaming and should stay there, warlmy pressed into our minds, not causing angsty rants on Internet blogs. The only paddle that EVER existed had a big red button and a knob, get it?

But I digress. He wants to set up a center to cater to perhaps a more discriminating crowd and they will eventually be looking for on on-air spot to promote it. Van asked me if I would produce it to run on the Buzz, a local alterna-inda-rock station. I said yes, of course. So, we’ll see if this pans out. It’s be great for a resume.

My (happy) lonliness has abated; my good friend Evan is now here with me, faithfully. We shall sally-forth in search of lunch. Have a happy Saturday all.

Mahalo.
