I’m an exception…

…Sometimes I forget that I’m not the average consumer. I am what could be called a hardcore gamer. I play a loooooot of videogames on a lot of different systems. I dabble in making my own games. I import crazy devices from China to run homebrew games.
What’s more is, I work with gamers. We discuss gaming news. I read gaming news instead of a morning paper. There are few things I miss. You might say I’m “in the know” (at least as ‘in the know’ as Google and my RSS Reader).
It is easy for me to think that everyone is as fanatic as I am, so when someone says something about games that is not true or misinformed I get a little miffed.
It is a character flaw. I know.
However, yesterday someone said something that was so misinformed, so completely not true, that I was unable to speak. We were discussing the PS3. We talked about the recent cuts in shipments and how Sony is getting lower yields of Blue laser diodes and it was all quite grand. Then out of the blue one of my compatriots said,
“I heard that Japan has had the PS3 for like three years and we[North America] aren’t getting them because there aren’t enough people who want to buy them.”
When I heard that, I had no response. I leave it to the reader to figure out what parts of that statement were patently false. However, the incident reminded me that I am not the average consumer. I am not the one the marketing people are trying to reach.
