A day of mourning…

…My Xbox 360 died yesterday under tragic circumstances.

I purchased Splinter Cell: Double Agent on Saturday but I couldn’t play it because we were traveling. So, bright and early Sunday morning I fired up the 360 and popped the disc in. I played for about 10 minutes, just long enough to create a profile and watch the first moments of the opening cut scene. Then, something terrible happened.

A piercing, growling noise came from my speakers and a frightening checkerboard pattern filled the screen.

I stayed calm. The 360 is a complicated piece of hardware; there are bound to be issues from time to time. I restarted the box and resumed playing. Moments later: growling noise horrifying checkerboard.

There was no red ring of death (the ominous signal used to discern the type of error plaguing the box). There were no helpful status codes on the screen. I began to worry.

I turned it on without a game, same result. I detached the hard drive, same result. I tried running Media Center, same result.

I checked the Xbox’s temperature. It was running cool, as was the power supply.

So, I am at a loss. There’s nothing I can do to bring it back. I have a copy of Splinter Cell: Double Agent that I can’t play. Gears of War is about to come out. XNA is launching soon.
