Setting up a widescreen monitor in Ubuntu Linux…

…I’m posting this to hopefully save someone some time. Here we go:

On a fresh install, Ubuntu 6.06 was only displaying at 1024×768 resolution on my widescreen monitor. This resulted in a stretched appearance. There was no other option in the Screen Resolution panel.

I have an Intel 945GM Mobile Graphics adapter. As a complete Linux novice I had a lot of trouble trying to fix this. I’ll skip the hassle and get down to what I did.

1. Open System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager

2. Go to Settings>Repositories

3. Make sure Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Community Maintained (Universe) is selected.

4. Search for ‘915resolution’

5. Install the package

6. Reboot

When this was done I had the option to select 1200×800 mode and it worked flawlessly.

I also installed the Intel driver using the Synaptic tool. I don’t know if this step was necessary.

The computer I was using was a Gateway NX560 with a 15″ widescreen monitor.

I hope this helps someone. :)
