The other side of the wall…

…When you are getting ready for a wedding it is as if you are walking towards a giant brick wall. Piled against the wall are all of the things that must be done to prepare for the wedding day. DJs, meals, tuxedoes, flowers, music, money, everything. It’s all that can be seen. You walk steadily towards the wall and, as you get closer to it, all you can see is the stuff piled high all around you. There’s noise, people talking, cars, trains, like a city. The closer you go the louder it gets. The mess and the noise grow and grow and grow until a sudden moment.

Magically, you are on the other side of the wall. You look out and, for a moment, all you see is a flat white expanse. There is silence. A glorious emptiness. Standing next to you is your best friend. She too is slightly unnerved by this new space. Slowly, though, she takes your hand and together you step forward. A flower sprouts up from below. Another step. Two bushes shake themselves free from the ground. More and more the white expanse fills with life as you walk further and further from the wall.

I can still see the wall behind me. But I am forever on this side of it. The side where I’m not alone. The side that only has potential. The side of growth not chaos.

I got married last week and I am waxing a little poetic today. Forgive me. It’s my first whole day back. Last night I carried Sarah over the threshold of our apartment and collapsed with her into our bed (two mattresses pushed together on the floor). I am truly happy. God brought us together and is keeping us together, day by day. If I’ve gained any wisdom through all of this, it is that God’s design if infinitely more interesting and ultimately satisfying than any plans we can make on our own. It’s worth it to be patient and seek out His will. All you have to do is ask.

In the next few days I’ll elaborate on our amazing honeymoon. I have almost a gigabyte of pictures and videos of our trip to Universal Studios. Look here for the highlights.
