Come Home
Brother
I met my brother-in-law, Jon, a year before I met my wife. We bonded over music and gutar playing.
Years passed and a lot of life happened. While we would jam out occasionally, we never got around to actually recording anything. In November of 2023, I decided to not let another visit pass without making that happen.
I spent a week getting my studio equipment set up and tested. For the first time ever, drums, bass, keyboard, guitars, amp, pedalboard, vocal mic: all hooked up and ready to rock.
The sleeping dog lump helps with the acoustics, I swear.
Then, I sat down and wrote a song for us to record.
The day after Jon arrived for his visit we got up early and got right to work. In about six hours he had learned the song and we had recorded all of the guitars for the track: doubled rhythm, lead parts, solos. We worked on timing and dynamics and refined the structure of the song. We talked about how the parts worked with and enhanced the meaning of the song. It was an inspiring, creatively fulfilling, and just plain fun day.
I spent another week cleaning up parts, re-recording vocals, and mixing and mastering the track. This is the result and I am very proud of it.
Come Home I turned off my phone Don’t care what it would say Alone in my car Just a stumble in the dark I’m trying to get away But I’d really rather come home Pushing up the stone It’s another hopeless day You say you need me I need to breathe I could chase myself away But I’d really rather come home Reach me I am slipping I'm falling further down Will you be there? Will you catch me? Before I hit the ground If I pretend to be strong Will you stay here with me? If I hold onto you tight Can I pretend its you holding me? Reach me I am slipping I'm falling further down Will you be there? Will you catch me? Before I hit the ground Lyrics: Jay Roberts Drums, Bass, Keyboards, Guitars: Jay Roberts Guitars: Jon Stauffer
